New Colours for Sony PSP

Four new colors of PSP hardware will be released in Japan this month, as SCEJ unveils a new set of “carnival colors”. “Vibrant Blue” and “Radiant Red” PSPs will launch on March 5th, and “Bright Yellow” and “Spirited Green” colors will follow with a March 19th debut. All four systems will be priced at a standard ¥19,800 ($222) each. Sony Computer Entertainment Asia launched the Vibrant Blue and Radiant Red models in January, but there is no indication of if and when any of the new colors might be available in the West. All four new SKUs are for the third-generation PSP-3000 model, and will launch alongside a new PSP Carnival Colors Value Pack. This new bundle will include the hardware, a 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo, a colored pouch, wrist strap and cloth, priced at ¥24,800 ($278).

At the same time, new Battery Pack bundle will become available, featuring a battery cover in one of the four new colors, priced at ¥5,500 ($62). New handheld colors have consistently proven an effective way of boosting sales in Japan, for both Sony and Nintendo’s portables. In addition to the standard “Piano Black”, “Pearl White” and “Mystic Silver” PSPs, a large number of limited-edition PSPs have also been released over the years, many branded to promote a specific new game.

milk@coffee (Å£ÄÌ@¿§·È) is a mixed duo group from China. It was by chance that I got to listen to this group recently and I immediately fell in love with their songs. "Ô½³¤´óÔ½¹Âµ¥ (More Grown Up, More Lonely)" is milk@coffee's 2nd album. Their music are mostly laid-back, soothing with hint of indie/rock and playfulness feel to their songs and combine with the voice of the lead singer, Kiki, this is a great album for me. If you like the mixed duo group, Deep White, you'll most probably like them as well.

Crashing Vista: nVidia drivers responsible for 30%

Nearly 30% of logged Vista crashes were due to NVIDIA driver problems, according to a Microsoft data included in the bundle. That’s some 479,326 hung systems, if you’re keeping score at home, and it’s in first place by a large margin — Microsoft clocks in at number two at 17.9 percent, and ATI is fourth with 9.3 percent. The data points in the table cover an unspecified period in 2007, and Microsoft makes no attempt to break the aggregate data down into which device drivers, specifically, returned the highest number of crashes. If the number of failures were split by month and then graphed, we’d presumably see the number of NVIDIA driver failures per month decreasing as the company slowly brought its driver issues under control.

The data clearly indicates that NVIDIA had a driver problem, but it’s impossible to quantify the scope of that problem given the numbers above. NVIDIA holds a greater percentage of the market than ATI, which means that there will inevitably be a higher percentage of NVIDIA driver crashes than ATI driver crashes; however, the degree to which such market share considerations have affected the results above is hard to determine in the absence of more data. There’s also the matter of data collection; Microsoft’s charts do not clarify if multiple crashes from a single system each counted as separate events. In theory, NVIDIA’s proportion of total driver crashes could be inflated by a relatively small handful of systems with severe driver issues.

Adobe launches free online Photoshop

Adobe has released its Photoshop Express web-based imaging application as a public beta. Photoshop Express uses much of Adobe’s image editing technology and has been repurposed as a web-based application. Users can store up to 2GB of images online for free, make edits to their photos and share them online. Photoshop Express also allows users to download and upload photos from popular social networking sites like Facebook. The application provides ’standard edits’, such as removing blemishes and red-eye, converting to black and white, cropping and resizing.

Photoshop Express also offers tricks like Pop Color which selects an object in an image, mutes the background colour of the photo and allows the user to swap the object’s colour so that it “jumps off the page”. Sketch effects make photos look like drawings, and a Distort feature allows users to distort facial features or objects for a comical or artistic effect. Adobe said that even users with limited photo editing knowledge can simply select what looks best from a line-up of sample photos with visual hints showing different variations of the added effect. During the public beta period, Adobe will solicit user feedback on product features and functionality which will “continue to evolve over time”.

AMD ships triple core Phenom X3

AMD on Thursday released seven new Phenom processors, aiming to hit the mainstream PC market with low-cost, performance-minded processors that include the first shipments of AMD’s triple-core Phenoms. Four of the chips are the new 50-series CPUs (also known as the “B3 stepping”) that fix the TLB (Translation Lookaside Buffer) erratum thatplagued the first batch of Phenom processors out of the gate. The TLB erratum necessitated a fix on the affected system’s motherboard BIOS (turning the TLB “off”) resulting in some reduced performance. The new 50-series processors have similar model numbers and have the same speed clock-for-clock: i.e. the Phenom 9500 and 9550 are both 2.2-GHz quad-core processors.

The new processors are the Phenom X4 9550 2.2 GHz ($195 per unit in 1,000 unit lots), the Phenom X4 9750 2.4 GHz ($215), and the unlocked Phenom X4 9850 “Black Edition” 2.5 GHz ($235, unlocked and overclockable). In addition, AMD added a low-power Phenom, the X4 9100e 1.8-GHz, which runs at 65 watts in active mode. Pricing was not available. It will allow OEMs to design smaller, sleeker PCs, AMD executives said. AMD’s other Phenom processors run either at 95 or 125 watts. AMD also began shipping what it calls the Phenom “X3″ processor, thetriple-core processor AMD announced in September . The X-rating has been applied to multi-core processors, so dual-core processors are the Athlon X2’s, triple cores are Phenom X3’s, and quad cores are Phenom X4’s. Two Phenom X3s will be available: the 8400 (2.1GHz) and 8600 (2.3GHz) processors. At press time, AMD had not made the pricing of either chip available.

Microsoft unveils Internet Explorer 8

It took many years from IE6 to IE7, but this browser is still quite new and Microsoft is already releasing a first beta version of IE8. MS unveiled the beta version of Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) for developers at the annual MIX08 conference in Las Vegas. The beta version of IE8 includes better predictability when designing sites, full support for cascading style sheet (CSS) 2.1 at release to manufacturing, and integrated developer tools to quickly debug HTML, CSS and scripts in a visual environment, Microsoft said. “A lot of the end user or consumer features are not featured on this build because it really is targeted at the developers and the designers,” Matthew Lepsen from the Microsoft IE development team, said on a video produced by Microsoft’s Channel 9 site. While the consumer version of IE8 will differ somewhat from this first beta, it will not be a dramatic change, Lepsen said. The software giant again stressed the browser’s interoperability. Microsoft on Tuesday announced that it will make IE8 standards compliant.

The browser will render the Acid2 browser test correctly, and fully supports CSS 2.1, Microsoft said. In an apparent coincidence, the Web Standards Group announced the release of the next-generation Acid3 test on Wednesday. The beta will also include two new features, dubbed Activities and WebSlices. Activities is intended to provide quick access to services from any Web site, Microsoft said. Once downloaded through the IE8 service guide, users can look up or send certain information from the Web. Those on a restaurant Web site, for example, can click within the page to get maps, look up news on the restaurant, blog about it, or share on Facebook. Activities will also feature partnerships with companies like eBay and Stumbleupon, which eBay acquired in May. Highlight something on a Web site, right click it, and see if that item is available on eBay without ever leaving the original Web site, Lepsen said. It will be interesting too see a final release, which will probably appear at the almost same time as Firefox 3.0.

Japan launches high-speed internet satellite

Japan successfully launched Saturday an experimental satellite aimed at providing high-speed Internet access across Asia, even when terrestrial infrastructure goes down, the space agency said. The domestically developed H-2A rocket carrying the Kizuna satellite was launched at 17:55 pm (0855 GMT) with no glitches from the Space Centre on Tanegashima island off the southern tip of Kyushu Island, southern Japan. The communications satellite, expected to be in use for five years, separated from the rocket approximately 35 minutes after the launch, said an official of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) during a live broadcast. The 342 million dollar-Kizuna will allow super-high speed data communications of up to 1.2 Gbps, which would make it the fastest in the world, the agency said.

That rate would translate to 150 times that of the average high-speed ADSL connection rate of 8 Mbps, or 12 times the speed of a fibre-optic communication delivery to a person’s premises (FTTP). The “Kizuna,” which also means “bond” in Japanese, is expected to begin transmitting and receiving data with terrestrial infrastructures in July after completing preparations and confirming the satellite’s safety. The satellite will enable students in Asian countries to communicate smoothly and with no time lag among one another, as if they were in the same classroom, it said. The satellite will to last five years, an agency spokeswoman said. The launch was delayed by one week after JAXA said it had discovered a problem with the gas jet thruster for its launch rocket.

vLite shrinks the size of Windows Vista to 10%

A Croatian college student has created a utility that installs a seriously stripped-down Windows Vista, saying the heft of Microsoft’s biggest desktop OS was just too big to believe. “Who can justify a 15GB operating system?” asked Dino Nuhagic, a fifth-year student from Split, a Croatian city on the Adriatic. Not Nuhagic, or the uncounted users who have turned to his creation, vLite. vLite is a free program that lets users pick and choose which Vista components, hotfixes, drivers and even language packs are installed, then builds a disk image that can be burned to a DVD for unattended installation of the operating system.

“Why did I do it? Well, it’s performance and work environment,” said Nuhagic when asked why he came up with vLite. “Performance, that’s easy to explain. The less things running, the more responsive the OS. But the environment part is where it gets down to personal preference.” Those preferences include options for leaving out virtually every component of Windows Vista, from the minor — such as the bundled screensavers — to the major, such as the firewall or Universal Plug and Play. Some vLite users, in fact, have made it a contest of sorts to come up with the puniest-possible installation package for the OS. While Microsoft recommends that users set aside 15GB of hard disk space to install its pride and joy, Nuhagic’s fans boast of squeezing it into an image file as small as 515MB that takes up just 1.4GB on the hard drive. Nintendo Wii still in the lead of console sales.

The videogame sector had a blowout month in December thanks to a strong slate of popular titles and the continued strength of the Nintendo Co. Wii, which remained in short supply through the holidays. Sales of videogame software in the U.S. jumped 36% during the month compared to last year, according to data from NPD Group released late Thursday. That came in ahead of most analysts’ estimates. Sales of game hardware grew 17% as consumers continued to snap up next-generation consoles from Nintendo, Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp. The Nintendo Wii ruled the day, coming in with sales of 1.35 million units for the month compared with 1.26 million units for the Xbox 360 and 797,600 units for the PlayStation 3. The PS3 has seen a huge boost in sales over the last two months thanks to a sharp price reduction for the console, which debuted on the market in late 2006 at the high price of $600.

The Wii finished the year as the top-selling console, with nearly 6.3 million units sold domestically. That compares to 4.6 million units for the Xbox 360 and nearly 2.6 million units for the PS3 for the year, according to NPD data. Among handheld devices, the Nintendo DS fared even better, with 8.5 million in sales for the year compared to 3.8 million for the Sony PSP. For game software, sales totaled more than $8.6 billion in the U.S. for the year, up 34% from the previous year. The most popular games in November remained at the top of the list for December. The top-selling game of the month was “Call of Duty 4″ from Activision Inc., which moved nearly 1.5 million units. Activision also had the No. 3 title for the month with “Guitar Hero III” for the PlayStation 2, which moved 1.25 million units.

YesAsia: Taiwanese boy band Fahrenheit vaulted to the forefront of the entertainment scene in 2006 after the broadcast of their hit dramas K One and Tokyo Juliet. By the time their chart-topping self-titled debut album was released, Wu Zun, Jiro Wang, Calvin Chen, and Aaron Yan were already big stars throughout Asia, and their popularity has only increased since. The opening theme of Romantic Princess, this love song features a fusion of modern and classic sounds for a sweet and romantic number.
